so my new favorite hobby is to sit and look out my window during the minutes after class gets out at like 1220 and watch everyone come out of the buildings only to discover the local 79 union is yet again protesting outside on willoughby at the main gate (this is the like main gate that you have to go through to get to the dorms and stuff across the street, in case you need a little visual..). for what seems to be almost a year now, the union has been protesting outside this gate with a giant inflatable rat with a sign and flyers saying "pratt the rat".
im not really sure what it is that they are protesting but i think it has something to do with not hiring union workers to do renovations or something? anyways there are like maybe 20 or so of them and as everyone has to walk across the street they try to get them to take flyers and sign petitions and shit.
well all of this would be okay if they were like normal new york flyer-hander-outers (yeah yeah?) but they are not. they make eye contact with you and dont let go until you stop, take out your earphones and listen/take/sign whatever it is they want.
we new yorkers dont really do well with eyecontact, when i am walking somewhere when its this cold out, i have earphones in, like 2 hats on and gloves with my hands in my pockets my head is down and all i want to do is get to where im going and not be cold anymore. and i'd say that most of the people here are the same way. eyecontact is a no-no simply because it means you have to take the time to stop, take your hands out of your pockets and quitepossibly mittens lift up your hat(s) and take out your earphones to listen to someone babble on about unions or whales in siberia or something.
dude also, fuck. greenpeace. like seriously.
ANYWAYS, the protestors presence at the main gate causes everyone, who are throughly annoyed that they have to walk an extra 5 minutes in the fucking cold ass weather, to have to funnel through the side smaller gate to avoid confrontation. and its funny.

so yesterday, or whatever day monday was, i was asked my favorite band. i paused and thought about it, and i though of the only band (other than paul simon of course) that i have been listening to for the past like 4 months: clinic.
i love the band clinic.
iive loved them since the first time i heard them back in like 9th grade when that movie "thirteen" came out with their song "the equalizer" on it. since i first heard that song, i thought jesus h. who is that band???
and then i bought their album "walking with thee"... and um didnt listen to them again for about 5 years.
but since last october, theyve been the soundtrack to my nasty, scum filled, pbr flooded life in the mean streets of the most depressed city on earth. and since then they have been the wierd-ass squeally band that has taken over my life. ,i would like to share with you, clinic. currently i am watching the movie "soul plane" and I must say that it is one of the funnier movies ive seen in awhile. i'm normally not one to sit through an entire movie but this one held my attention for the entire hour and a half.
i am also a fan of other bet "blackbuster" movies which include "crooklyn" and "lean on me" and "beauty shop".
also i would recommend checking out the show "hell date". you'll find its much funnier than any of those other dating shows on viacom's channels (this means you, "neXt").
in other news,
i keep trying to unplug my tv but after a few days i find myself saying "oh fuck it, i need this." and i am willing to accept that. wanna know why? its january. its -balls degrees outside, and honestly at this point, if it doesnt deliver, then i dont need it. that being said, ill try that again in april perhaps. or if global warming does its part, march.

so i feel like i'm always giving my friends (except tim hah..) nerdy advice so i thought id make some suggestions of things you should check out next time you're uh..bored.

Last.fm: so last.fm is kinda like pandora but its oh so much more. it works with your itunes and "scrobbles" the songs that you play. It then recommends other bands (that you can often listen to online)that they think you'll like. Also its pretty cool because the last.fm application that you download opens when you open itunes and when you play a song it gives you some info about the band. It keeps track of what you listen to and how many times you listen to it so over time you can see charts of your listening patterns and stuff. be my friend on last.fm: angela20377

Yelp: basically it is user reviews and raitings for local businesses and restaurants and so on, but its an attractive and simple lay out and ive found the reviews to be pretty helpful. dude, be my friend on yelp.. angela20377

I didn't have any art history classes in which to make my blog (i still hate that word) posts.
well, lately i've starting listening to some new music (the theatre fire, i love math) and re-listening to some older music that i hadn't heard in awhile (old 97's, deathray davies).
so i thought for christmas/chanukah/kawanza/jens birthday etc. i'd post some current fav. albums and some mixes perhaps. and oh yeah just a quick note, some of these bands (i.e. the theatre fire) are local and not like money-mongering huge and obnoxous (think: U2) and I kinda feel a little bad posting their albums but they're just so good i can't resist. so if you like them, please make an effort to go see them live or just support them in some way, to lessen my guilt and to support some good fort worthless music.

The Theatre Fire- Self Titled.
The Theater Fire has a knack for spinning yarns about drifters, hangmen, brothers, and lovers grappling with their own honor, trust, guilt and loss. These tales are woven together by arrangements that include weeping pedal steel and violin, strains of accordion, mandolin and xylophone, plucked banjo and guitar, sorrowful brass and the clip-clop of found percussion. Theatre Fire's second release, I haven't listened to this one as much as the first one but it also seems to be pretty good. TF's sound sort of reminds me a little bit of beirut because their original eclectic sound, which seems to be a rare thing lately. these guys really are the best new thing i've heard in awhile.

so recently i think theres been a sign from the music gods or whatever that I need to listen to the brian jonestown massacre. like the other night i fell asleep while watching this tv program about them and then the next day im like going about my merry way when i turn on the tv, which i always must do when im doing my lcd (light color and design) homework, and it turns out theres this docudrama on the history channel about the jonestown massacre (who am i kidding, ive seen that docudrama like 5 times but im always a sucker for the history channel's reinactments of mass cult killings/suicide by childrens purple powder drink..)

so does everyone remember the adventure club with josh on 102.1 the edge? the sunday night show when he played stuff that wasn't "radio-accessable" during normal broadcast hours? and perhaps the greatest radio show ever made? so what if half the songs were morrissey-related.. those few hours of the adventure club were the ear- aromatherapy for thousands of teen-angsty kids all over the metroplex.
